I went to CJ's Pantry right after dropping Bobby after work one morning. It was recommended to us by a family friend who used to live in Redondo, and, as it turns out, it's only a few blocks from Bobby's place! Bob is not a big breakfast guy, though I personally love it, so I gave it a try solo.
In retrospect, I should have walked to CJ's, because it's metered parking out front. Too bad; we blew most of our quarters on the tollway coming back from San Diego, so I was pretty low on silver.
Once inside, it's a very cool diner-y vibe; lots of memorabilia on the walls, and a very comfortable, friendly feel. I sat at the small bar area, which I prefer when dining alone. The server was not this overwhelmingly fake friendly sort; she was kind, professional and polite, and kept my coffee cup full. I liked that. A lot of the time in the service industry people can be overwhelmingly fake friendly or enthusiastic, and that can come off as kitschy and trying too hard. She seemed to care about her customers, and just wanted to do her job. She was awesome!
I ordered the breakfast bang; for $7.50, I got a veggie omelette with hash browns, a gorgeous slice of cantaloupe, and AMAZING coffee cake! I took the coffee cake to go because I couldn't finish it and Bobby loved it-- the butter it comes with is amazing too. The omelette was pretty good, but I should have asked for cheese in it, as it was simply veggies and eggs. The vegetables were lovely, fresh, and flavorful, and the omelette was perfectly fluffy. Some monterey jack in there would have been perfect.
I LOVED the hash browns! They were salty, crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. It was a manageable amount of food, and great value for the price.
I recommend breakfast at CJ's followed by a walk on the Strand!
